Work for minorities without caring for credit: Minister

New Delhi : States should work in unison with the central government for the welfare of minorities without caring for credit, Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said Friday.

The governments of states and union territories should "work in unison with the ministry of minority affairs for implementing various schemes meant for the welfare of the minorities without indulging in one-upmanship for getting the credit", Khurshid said.

He was speaking at the annual conference of state government officials for minorities.

Gujarat cop held in Prajapati killing sent to police custody

Gandhinagar : Gujarat Police inspector Ashish Pandya, who was arrested from Rajkot Thursday for his role in the killing of Tulsi Prajapati in an alleged fake gun battle, was presented before a Danta court Friday and remanded in 12-day police custody.

Pandya, who refused a lawyer and argued his case in person, has denied all the charges made out by the police. He is the fifth policeman to be arrested in the case.

NGO files plea before Gujarat riots commission

Gandhinagar : Activist Teesta Setalvad of Mumbai-based NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace Friday filed an affidavit before the G.T. Nanavati-Akshay Mehta judicial enquiry commission providing details of the locations of some important mobile phone numbers during the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat.

She said the locations of these mobile numbers were clinching evidence of their movements during these crucial days and of the complicity of the state government in the post-Godhra communal riots.

Apex court SIT submits report on Gulbarg Society massacre

New Delhi : The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigating Team (SIT) Friday submitted to the apex court registry its report on the Gulbarg Society massacre in which 69 people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri, were killed during the 2002 Gujarat communal riots.

The panel, headed by former Central Bureau of Investiogation (CBI) director R.K. Raghvan, probed the allegation of inaction by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues and several senior officers of the state to prevent or tackle the carnage.

Zakat Foundation selects IAS aspirants for coaching

New Delhi: Zakat Foundation of India today selected 28 candidates from 12 states in the country to coach them for the Civil Services Examination 2011. The selection was made after entrance test and interview on May 11-13. Of 28, 21 are Muslims with three women among them. ZFI will provide them with free of cost coaching, lodging and food.

Sir Syed Coaching & Guidance Centre, which is jointly sponsored by Zakat Foundation of India & Interfaith Coalition for Peace, conducted the entrance test, and will look after the selected candidates.

Hyderabad police picket attack conspiracy against Muslims: CLMC

Hyderabad: There seems to be a big conspiracy behind the attack on police picket in the Old City of Hyderabad today. This could be to defame Muslims and to silence them to demand justice in Mecca Masjid blast, said Lateef Mohd Khan, General Secretary, Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee.

A policeman was killed and two others were injured on Friday when two people on a motorcycle opened fire on a police picket in Shah Ali Banda area in the Old City of Hyderabad. The killers could not caught.

Husna Fathima tops Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary exam

Chennai: Husna Fathima of Hasnath Jaria Girls' Higher Secondary School (English medium) in Ambur has topped entire Tamil Nadu state Muslim schools in the Higher Secondary Examination 2009-2010. According to the results announced today, Fathima scored 1159 marks out of 1200. She will opt for information technology.

Sarvath Naveen of the same school has got 1139 out of 1200 marks and has got third rank in the state from Zoology stream. She wants to pursue MBBS.

Some Muslim Higher Secondary schools have performed well.

Cop shot dead in Hyderabad, high alert in city

Hyderabad : A policeman was killed and two others were injured when two people on a motorcycle opened fire on a police picket in the old city of Hyderabad Friday. A high alert has been sounded across the city.

The incident took place this evening near Volga Hotel in Shahali Banda area, about a km from the historic Charminar and Mecca Masjid.

New Delhi: The Central Government yesterday approved changes in the eligibility criteria for meritorious students from low income background to avail themselves of the benefits of central government scholarship scheme. The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, took the decision.

The Cabinet approved the changes in the eligibility norms for the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University students.

Everybody loves a bad fatwa. And why not? It fills column space for newpapers; It brings in viewers for Television channels; it plays into the image of Muslims as a backward community for communalists; and it gives activists a chance to reinforce their secular credentials. Never mind that this fatwa will not change the lives of millions of Muslims and text of the fatwa could be not what has been reported or maybe the said fatwa doesn't even exist.
