Bihar Govt approves Rs. 8 cr for Maulana Mazharul Haque University

Patna: In a landmark decision yesterday the Bihar government decided to provide a piece of land to Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University, full twelve years after it was set up. The state Cabinet in a meeting presided by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on 27th April sanctioned Rs. 8.32 crore for the purpose. Hopefully, the university will have now its own land and shed.

40 held for Rae Bareli communal clash over cricket match

Lucknow: Around 40 people have been arrested for their involvement in a communal clash that broke out over a cricket match left at least 12 people injured in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli district, officials said Thursday, adding the situation is now "absolutely normal".

"There's nothing to worry now. The situation is peaceful and normal in the Jais town. However, we are still maintaining round the clock vigil in the town and adjoining areas," District Magistrate Charanjeet Singh Bakshi told IANS on telephone from Rae Bareli, some 80 km from Lucknow.

New Delhi: A Muslim delegation today met Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD) Mr. Kapil Sibal to demand restoration of minority character of Jamia Millia Islamia and release of funds for incomplete projects at the university.

The delegation comprised MP Maulana Asrarul Haq Qasmi, Shahi Imam Mufti Mokarram and editor of Milli Gazette Dr. Zafrul Islam Khan.

Delhi blasts accused was minor, mother tells court

New Delhi: The mother of Salman Ahmad, a suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist and Delhi serial blast accused, told a city court Thursday that his date of birth recorded in a Mumbai school was the correct one.

She informed the court that Salman's actual date of birth is Feb 9, 1992, and that at the time of the Delhi serial blasts in September 2008, he was 16 and a half years old - legally an underage. The court had earlier been given two different dates of birth for Ahmad by the authorities of two schools he attended.

Patna: When Nitish Kumar came to power in 2005, he promised to work for the welfare of the downtrodden especially Muslims. Now that his government is about to complete its tenure and assembly election is scheduled later this year, his government has come up with a brochure highlighting his 'works' in the last four and half years for the minority community. But have a cursory look at the brochure and you will find how the state government has regularly cut allocation for minority welfare projects.

No word on ISI hand in Babri demolition, cop tells court

Lucknow : Anju Gupta, a senior police officer and key witness in the Babri Mosque demolition case, Thursday refuted the defence contention that Pakistan's intelligence agency was involved in pulling down the 16th century mosque.

During her cross-examination, Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Gupta maintained before the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Rae Bareli that the mosque was under greater threat from Hindu karsewaks than Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Patna: In the last three years, Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Prof P K Abdul Azis has suspended/rusticated 148 students to maintain peace and law and order situation in the university campus. While the authorities say the university was forced to take hard measures of suspension and rustication, others say style of functioning of the university authorities has been dictatorial since VC Prof Azis assumed office.

India is among 12 countries including Afghanistan, Indonesia and Russia that have been put on watch list of the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), a bipartisan US panel on global religious freedom.

New Delhi: Most of 37 Muslim candidates who qualified this year for top government jobs in Bihar by clearing Bihar Public Service Commission exam are from rural areas in the state. A heavy majority of aspiring as well as working civil servants are also from rural areas or small towns/qasbas. Urban Muslims, however, are more interested in easy and early earning – so prefer private jobs or business.

RJD, SP MPs walk out of Lok Sabha over Muslim quota

New Delhi : Samajwadi Party (SP) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MPs Thursday walked out of the Lok Sabha during question hour over the issue of greater representation to Muslims in government jobs.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad asked whether the government was planning to give proportionate representation to Muslims in various government sectors. However, Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said he could not reply to the query as it had not been listed.

In response, Lalu Prasad said that the government was "anti-Muslim" and demanded a proper reply from the minister.

Lucknow : Around 40 people have been arrested for their involvement in a communal clash that left at least 12 people injured in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli district, police said Thursday.

An altercation Wednesday between boys of two communities playing cricket Wednesday in Rae Bareli's Jais town, some 80 km from Lucknow, snowballed into a clash as adults from both the communities joined in and resorted to arson and vandalism, police said.
