Hyderabad MP Owaisi protests against detention of Muslim youths

Hyderabad: Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad and president of Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen Asaduddin Owaisi came out of his home past midnight yesterday when he was informed that Hyderabad city police and Special Task Force sleuths are breaking into Muslim houses in Old City area and arresting innocent Muslim youths. He went to the Charminar Police Station and sat on dharna demanding release of the innocents.

Shoaib signed nikahnama, reveals his lawyer

Hyderabad/New Delhi: A day after a young woman who claims to be the wife of Shoaib Malik made public the nikhanama to prove the marriage, the Pakistani cricketer Saturday admitted that he signed the marriage document presuming that the bride was the girl whose photographs were sent to him.

Shoaib's lawyer Ramesh Gupta told some news channels in Delhi that the signature on the nikahnama was indeed that of Shoaib's. "Shoaib told me that he signed the nikahnama, believing the girl to be the one whose photographs were sent to him," he said.

J&K Govt for grant of ST status to Pahari-speaking people

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government will vigorously pursue with the Centre the matter relating to grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Pahari-speaking people of the state, Social Welfare Minister Sakina Itoo said on Friday.

She gave this assurance in the Legislative Council while replying to a discussion raised by NC member Mohammad Rashid Qureshi.

The Minister said the demand for granting ST status to Pahari-speaking people was also projected by the then Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K V Krishna Rao in 1993.

New Delhi: Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy Saturday termed as "cheap political gimmicks" Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's comments on Sania Mirza's proposed marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.

"The comment of Bal Thackeray is highly symptomatic of his notorious tendency to lend a communal colour to every issue. The people of India, in the second decade of 21st century, are much too mature and sophisticated for such cheap political gimmicks," Reddy said in a statement released here.

New Delhi: A top Muslim cleric Saturday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the alleged fake shootout at the Batla House in which two suspected terrorists were killed following the 2008 serial bomb blasts in Delhi.

Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari, who leads the prayers in Delhi's Jama Masjid, said he held a 35-minute meeting with the prime minister during which he showed him documentary evidence suggesting that the Sep 19, 2008 gunfight in Batla House was staged by the police.

Government doesn't pay for Kalam's foreign trips

New Delhi: The government Saturday clarified that it was not paying for former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's foreign trips, saying his travel expenses were borne by his hosts.

A report in a national daily March 12 had suggested that ever since demitting office in 2007, Kalam has been a "frequent flyer" and the government was "looking to see if it can put a cap on such visits".

Mumbai: A day after attacking tennis star Sania Mirza for her proposed marriage to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, the Shiv Sena did a U-turn on the issue Saturday, terming it her "personal matter".

Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray told mediapersons here that the party's views on Sania-Shoaib marriage were made clear in party mouthpiece Saamna Friday.

"Beyond that, we have no problems with Sania Mirza's marriage with anybody. It's a personal matter and she has right to make a choice of her life partner," Uddhav declared.
