Left parties support Muslim quota in West Bengal

Kolkata: In a bid to woo West Bengal Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind leader Maulana Siddiqullah Chowdhury, whose mass movement for Muslim quota preceded the state government decision favoring the demand, and the decisive Muslim votes, a Cabinet Minister of the Left Front Government has invited Chowdhury to form a united Muslim front on the issue and called upon the Muslim community to get united for it.

Ranganath Mishra report may be discussed in parliament

New Delhi: Amid political stalemate over introduction of the women's reservation bill in the Lok Sabha, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government Monday indicated its desire to discuss the Ranganath Mishra report, which recommends 15 per cent quota for minorities in jobs and education.

Congress sources said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee indicated possibility of the report being taken up for discussion during his meeting with leaders of political parties in the Lok Sabha on the women's reservation bill.

The report was tabled in parliament in December last year.

No consensus on women's bill, discussions to continue

New Delhi: The government Monday said it would continue discussions on the women's reservation bill to arrive at a consensus after its all-party meeting on the issue saw many of the bill's opponents sticking to their demand for a quota within quota.

"Further discussion will continue," the government said in a statement after the nearly two-and-half hours' meeting on the bill that provides for 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

New Delhi: Maulana Azad Education Foundation (MAEF), a central government agency run under the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, has provided scholarships to 15,070 meritorious girl students belonging to Minority communities spending Rs. 18.08 crore while it has aided 105 NGOs to construct schools/hostels etc. for Minority girls with an amount of Rs. 13.37 crore during the last fiscal ending 31st March 2010.

Bhopal’s Qazi e Shahar passes away

Bhopal: The Qazi e Shahar of Bhopal, the state capital of central Indian province of Madhya Pradesh, Maulana Mufti Abdul Lateef Khan Qasmi passed away in the wee hours of Sunday morning following massive cardiac arrest while being rushed to hospital. He was 63. He is survived by his wife, three sons and six daughters and large number of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

Srinagar : A policeman who foiled an attack on a Congress leader's house in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district has been promoted and given cash reward, police said Monday.

Constable Mushtaq Ahmad was given one rank promotion and Rs.10,000 by Farooq Ahmad, inspector general of police.

Three militants had attacked Pulwama district Congress president Abdul Gani Dar's house in Rohama village late Sunday. Mushtaq Ahmad opened fire killing one militant and injuring one more. The injured militant was later arrested.

Guwahati : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday accused the Congress of appeasing minorities in the country to strengthen its vote bank and said the concept of secularism propagated by the ruling party is only helping terrorists to carry out their violent strikes in India.

New Delhi: Leaders of Muslim religious and social organizations have demanded the Central Government to revise the Draft Communal Violence Bill, 2009 to incorporate provisions to make police and civil administration and state authorities accountable. The Joint Committee of Muslim Organisations for Empowerment (JCMOE) has made the demand on behalf of these organizations. Police lift day curfew in riot-hit Hyderabad

Hyderabad : After more than a week of tension, people in parts of communally sensitive Hyderabad breathed easier Monday with curfew being relaxed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Amid massive security arrangements, life returned to near normalcy in the old city and other areas, which were rocked by communal violence last week.

Police Commissioner A.K. Khan, however, warned that any untoward incident would lead to reimposition of the curfew.
