A report titled 'Torture in India 2010' released by the Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) here yesterday has revealed an increase of 41.66% in custodial deaths under UPA government at the Centre.

Madras HC reserves verdict on new state education policy

Chennai: The Madras High Court yesterday concluded hearing on the petitions filed against "Samacheer Kalvi" (Equitable Standard of Education) policy of the state government but reserved the judgment. The much debated Samacheer Kalvi System of education has already been introduced in Tamil Nadu in phased manner commencing this academic year from June for the Class 1 and Class 6 where in Tamil and English only will be treated as examination languages.

West Bengal Govt forms team for AMU campus

Aligarh: The Chief Minister of West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has constituted a team to expedite the process of land transfer to Aligarh Muslim University for establishing its special centre in Murshidabad. The team will comprise Mr. Moinul Hasan, MP of Murshidabad, West Bengal State Commissioner at New Delhi and Union Finance Minister's private secretary Mr. Manoj.

The team has been given a mandate to coordinate all the issues relating to the transfer of land from Ministry of Water Works to Ministry of Human Resource Development and finally to AMU.

UGC releases Rs 35 crore for AMU campuses in Murshidabad, Malappuram

Aligarh: In a big push for Aligarh Muslim University's off-campus centres project, the University Grants Commission has released an amount of Rs. 35 crore as grant-in-aid for establishment of the special centre in Murshidabad and Malappuram. An amount of Rs. 25 crore has been earmarked for Murshidabad campus and Rs. 10 crore for Malappuram campus.

Patna: Of 362 successful candidates in Bihar Public Service Commission exam 2010, there are 37 Muslims, i.e. about 10.22%. At technical institutes run by Imarat Shariah there are 1500 Muslim students. Rahmani-30 coaching centre for IIT entrance registered 100% success last year. And now a study centre of Aligarh Muslim University is going to be set up. Combine all, and you get a good picture of Muslims education in Bihar.

Srinagar : Their art thrived in the shadow of militancy but was never visible to the world. Now, at last, over 50 young artists from the Kashmir Valley will get to display their works thanks to a clutch of students based outside the troubled state.

Parcel bomb delivery boy's sketch being prepared: police

New Delhi : A sketch of the boy who delivered the parcel bomb which injured a 45-year-old businessman in his southeast Delhi home Monday is being prepared with the help of his relative Ijaz, who had received it, police Tuesday said.

The parcel bomb was received by Ijaz, a relative of Mohammad Uzair, 45, from an unknown person. Ijaz handed over the parcel to Uzair and it exploded as he was opening it. Uzair sustained injuries on his face and hands.
