Chennai: No doubt, the Muslims of Tamil Nadu have improved educationally to some extent during the past two decades, thanks to the awakening among them for higher education such as medical and engineering even though it is not as fast and vigorous as in other communities. The Tamil Nadu Haj Service Society is guiding the community by conducting free educational counselling and courses through its Educational Counselling Centre.

Masses swayed by sensational media gossips

In the recent times media's love for sensationalism has been boundless. Supposedly serious print and electronic media have also gone crazy and over-board with gossip and inconsequential news items like M F Husain insulting the Hindu sentiment, Taslima Nasreen hurting the Muslim ego, Amitabh Bachchan and the Maharashtra CM in a silly controversy, Sania Mirza to marry Shoaib Malik. Such trivias are blown up to larger than life size and days and weeks are wasted in going over their details.

Tipu's sword fetches 500,000 pounds in auction

London : Seven years after Indian liqour baron Vijay Mallya bought a sword of Tipu Sultan, a majestic sabre of the Mysore king fetched 505,250 pounds at a Sotheby's auction here.

The 200-year-old sword was estimated to go under the hammer for 50,000-70,000 pounds. It eventually sold Wednesday at nearly 10 times that estimate.

According to the auction house, there are a very small number of sword hilts, such as the one auctioned, which have a pronounced tiger theme that was a mark of Tipu's ownership.

Aligarh: Ms. Khushboo Mirza, a distinguished alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University who shot to fame after becoming a member of the team of engineers working on Chandrayan project, recently visited the university to interact with the research scholars of the Department of Applied Chemistry, AMU. Mirza joined ISRO after graduating from Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology of AMU.

ATS forcing blasts accused in Jaipur jail for confession

Jaipur: Muslim groups in Rajasthan have charged that Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officials are forcing Jaipur terror blasts accused, currently lodged in Jaipur jail, for fresh confessions while the probe into the May 2008 serials blasts have been completed. The Muslim groups, after visiting the jail, alleged that the inmates are being kept without basic amenities, in violation of the Jail Manual and forced to make fresh confession despite the completion of investigation.

SIO condoles death of Dr Israr Ahmed

New Delhi: The Students Islamic Organization of India (SIO) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned Islamic scholar Dr Israr Ahmad (1932-2010). Prolific writer and orator Dr. Ahmed breathed his last in Lahore, Pakistan early on Wednesday. He died of a massive cardiac arrest.

10 injured in Kashmir clashes

Srinagar : Ten people, including five policemen, were injured as protestors clashed with the security forces Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore town, police said.

The protests started after a youth drowned in Jhelum river Tuesday. Locals alleged that Zubar-ul-Hassan Bhat had jumped into the river after being chased by police during clashes in the town.

Muntazer Bashir, a Class 11 student, was critically injured Wednesday after being hit on the head by a tear gas shell, police said.
