Modi seeks apology for German parliamentarians remarks

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Saturday sought the central government's intervention to lodge a protest with the German government against allegedly offensive remarks made by an unofficial delegation of German parliamentarians against Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

An unofficial delegation on a visit to India had stated Thursday that Modi was persona non-grata in the European Union countries and Germany also supported the denial of a visa to the chief minister for his alleged role in the 2002 ethnic conflict in Gujarat.

'Honest differences with Sharad on women's bill'

New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Nitish Kumar Saturday admitted that there was "an honest difference of opinion" between him and party president Sharad Yadav on the women's reservation bill.

Nitish Kumar added that members of the JD-U parliamentary party will take a decision on the legislation when it is taken up for voting in the Lok Sabha.

Curfew completely lifted in Hyderabad's riot-hit areas

Hyderabad: Hyderabad police Saturday completely lifted curfew in the old city and other areas rocked by communal violence late last month.

Police Commissioner A.K. Khan announced that night curfew was being lifted with immediate effect in all 25 police station areas as the situation had returned to normal.

However, prohibitory orders banning assembly of five or more people would remain in force in all 25 police station areas, he added.

Police had Friday extended the curfew relaxation period from 12 hours to 17 hours after the prayers passed off peacefully.

Good if government quashes Haj subsidy, say leading Muslims

New Delhi: If the government wants to do away with the subsidy for Haj pilgrims it is fine, some leading Muslims feel, but they want transparency and privatisation of the pilgrimage programme.

"There is no demand for the subsidy. The Haj becomes necessary only if you can afford it - physically as well as financially. If the government wants to end it (the subsidy), I will more than welcome that," Maulana Abdul Hamid Nomani, spokesperson of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, told IANS.

Case against four AMU officials for breach of privacy

Aligarh: Acting on court orders, a first information report (FIR) was registered Saturday against four Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) officials and some journalists for breaching the privacy of gay varsity teacher S.R. Siras, who was found dead Wednesday.

Siras was filmed in a consensual homosexual act with a rickshaw puller in his room in the AMU premises and was suspended from the university in February for "gross misconduct".
