Patna: Life remained unaffected today in Patna and other parts of the state, making flop the Bihar bandh call of BJP's youth wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad against the coming Kishanganj campus of Aligarh Muslim University. The unsuccessful bandh sent a strong signal across that public does not buy the view of ABVP that the AMU campus in Muslim dominated eastern Bihar district will become a shelter for terrorists.

New Delhi: The British Indian Muslims group, Council of Indian Muslims—COIM (UK), has expressed concern over anti-Muslim violence and illegal detentions and encounters of Muslim youths in India. COIM has deplored the pre-planned communal riots in Bareily and now in Hyderabad and the government's decision not to order a judicial probe into the Batla House encounter, a demand made by not only Muslims but several human rights groups.

Patna: The Bihar unit of Campus Front of India has condemned "the communal blackmailing" of BJP youth wing ABVP by opposing the state government decision to set up Aligarh Muslim University's branch in Kishanganj, a Muslim dominated district in Bihar. The state cabinet has approved acquisition of about 250 acres of land for the campus in the eastern Bihar district.

Thiruvananthapuram: Taking first step towards reforming the British-era police system, the Kerala state yesterday came up with the Kerala Police Bill, 2010. After the tabling of the bill by Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan followed by a three-hour discussion, the Kerala Assembly referred it to its Select Committee, seeking a comprehensive revision of the legal provisions governing the functioning of the police force in the state. The bill will regulate the powers of the police.

I watched the Bollywood film My Name is Khan the other day. The brilliant depiction of an autistic person by India's leading actor Shah Rukh Khan and director Karan Johar's surprisingly taut direction made for a good film.

In one particular scene, I felt a lump form in my throat. Sonya Jehan, the actress who plays Khan's sister-in-law, a working woman living on the West Coast of the United States, has her hijab pulled off while walking down a hallway.

ABVP shutdown begins in Bihar

Patna : The statewide dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Bihar called by the students organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Thursday, to protest the government's decision to set up a branch of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Kishanganj, began on a peaceful note with no reports of violence.

Police sources said security forces were deployed to keep a close watch on the situation.

ABVP activists Monday clashed with the police in Patna during their protest against the setting up of the AMU branch. Ten police officials and students were injured.

Hyderabad peaceful, curfew to be relaxed Thursday

Hyderabad: The situation in riot-hit parts of Hyderabad remained peaceful Wednesday and the police decided to relax curfew for two hours on Thursday in some areas.

No untoward incident was reported from any of the curfew-bound or other areas of the city since Wednesday night.

Police Commissioner A.K. Khan told reporters that curfew would be relaxed for two hours in 17 police stations of the old city where curfew was imposed Monday night following communal clashes.

"Only women and men over the age of 50 will be allowed to come out during the relaxation," said Khan.

New Delhi: Nobel laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Oscar winner A.R. Rahman and Bollywood actor Aamir Khan were among those conferred with the prestigious Padma awards here Wednesday by President Pratibha Patil.

In a grand ceremony, the Padma Vibhushan - the second highest civilian award - was bestowed upon Indian-origin American Ramakrishnan, eminent theatre personality Ebrahim Alkazi and founder chairman of Apollo Hospitals Pratap C. Reddy.
