Omar asks Army to cooperate in fake encounter inquiry Posted: 28 May 2010 09:02 AM PDT By AIP Bureau Srinagar: Taking strong note of an alleged fake encounter case involving a Major, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday asked the Indian Army to cooperate in the investigations being carried out by the police. Commander of 15 Corps Lt Gen N C Marwah met the Chief Minister who reiterated his government's commitment to zero tolerance to human right violations. General Marwah assured the Chief Minister of complete cooperation and also apprised him that a high-level internal enquiry had been launched by the army to ascertain the facts. |
Jamia Millia to conduct B.Tech entrance test in 63 centres Posted: 28 May 2010 08:54 AM PDT By IANS New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia University will hold entrance tests for its B.Tech course outside Delhi in 63 centres Saturday. The university received 37,000 applications for its 350-seat B.Tech course. "For the first time, the university moves out of Delhi to conduct its entrance test as the demand is huge for the course. The entrance will be conducted in Patna, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Ranchi, Srinagar and Guwahati," Simi Malhotra, media coordinator of the university, said Friday. |
Riot-hit area of Ahmedabad peaceful Posted: 28 May 2010 08:50 AM PDT By IANS Ahmedabad: The riot-hit Shahpur area of Ahmedabad in Gujarat remained tense but peaceful with no untoward incident being reported Friday, police said. Ahmedabad Joint Police Commissioner Satish Sharma termed the situation in the affected area as under control. Clashes between two groups over a minor incident left one person dead Monday. Four people were stabbed. Trouble began when a marriage procession with loudspeakers blaring passed by a place of worship when prayers were in progress. |
Four-member family meets tragic end in West Bengal rail mishap Posted: 28 May 2010 08:47 AM PDT By IANS Kolkata: Four members of a family, who boarded a long distance train for the first time, were killed in the Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express train tragedy Friday. Syed Javed Alam was taking wife Sabia Javed and their twin daughters Shirin and Shamrin to meet Sabia's elder sister in Mumbai. Both Syed and Sabia were school teachers. "All four have been killed in the accident. It was for the first time that they were going out of the state and boarded a long distance train. Both Shirin and Shamrin were very happy that they are going to Mumbai," relative Reshma Khatun said. |

After his arrival here, Stagg called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. "In an hour long meeting, the two discussed various socio-economic and political developments in the state," an official statement here said. The high commissioner was later scheduled to meet Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, chairman of the moderate Hurriyat group. |

The examination was held for admission to Army, Navy and Air Force Wings of National Defence Academy and Naval Academy 10+2 (Executive Branch). Very few Muslims are among the successful candidates. Among 694 successful candidates for Army/Navy, there are only 13 Muslims. For Air Force, 282 have been selected. Muslims among them are just 5 while for the Naval Academy there is only 1 Muslim among 57 successful candidates. |

Two arrested for involvement in fake gun battle in Kashmir Posted: 28 May 2010 04:32 AM PDT By IANS, Srinagar : Two people have been arrested for the disappearance of three men in the Kashmir Valley who were allegedly killed in a fake gun battle near the border with Pakistan. An officer said Bashir Ahmad, a former special police officer, and his accomplice Fayaz Ahmad were arrested for the disappearance last month of Shahzad Ahmad, Riyaz Ahmad and Muhammad Shafi from Nadihal village in Sopore district. Locals and relatives of the three have alleged that the pair abducted them from their homes April 29. |

"There will be rain and thundershowers across the valley in the next 12 hours. The weather will only show signs of improvement by tomorrow (Saturday) evening," said an official of the weather office here. "The minimum temperature in the valley will stay around 13 degrees Celsius during the next 24 hours," the official added. |
