Arrested Dahod police chief's remand extended Posted: 11 May 2010 10:27 AM PDT By IANS, Gandhinagar: A Gujarat court Tuesday extended by seven more days the police remand of Dahod Superintendent of Police Vipul Agrawal, arrested in connection with the Tulsi Prajapati "gunfight" case. Agrawal was arrested by the state CID (crime) earlier this month and was remanded in police custody for seven days. He was the then Banaskantha police chief when Prajapati, the sole witness in the staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, was killed by the police. |
Kashmir gives aid to slain militants kins as goodwill gesture Posted: 11 May 2010 09:36 AM PDT By Wasim Khan, AIP, Srinagar: The rehabilitation council of the Social Welfare Department of Jammu & Kashmir was already providing financial assistance to the children, widows and parents of terror victims but it has now gone a step ahead and is providing assistance to the family members of slain militants as well. The initiative has been taken in a bid to bring these families in the mainstream by extending a goodwill gesture. More than 40,000 people have died during the insurgency that started in 1989. |
Most of Bihar cities alarmingly dirty: Govt survey Posted: 11 May 2010 08:10 AM PDT By TCN News, Patna: Most of the cities in Bihar are in red category, according to a Central Government rating of cities under the National Urban Sanitation Policy. The rating covers 423 major cities, almost 72 percent of India's total urban population. Of 19 cities of Bihar in the list, 17 are in red zone. Nationwide 190 cities are in red zone. Chandigarh is the cleanest city in the country with 73.48 score while Churu in Rajasthan, the dirtiest with 16.75 points. |

"Stray incidents of hartals (shutdowns) and disturbances take place everywhere in the world, but when the same happens in Jammu and Kashmir, these are magnified larger than the factual position," Abdullah said at a seminar on Public Private Partnership here. |

No fresh evidence to extend ban: SIMI tells court Posted: 11 May 2010 07:02 AM PDT By IANS, New Delhi: The banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) Tuesday told a special tribunal of the Delhi High Court that the government had no fresh evidence against it to extend the ban while the police said the group continued to be active under other names. Moving three applications before Justice Sanjiv Khanna, counsel for SIMI Mobin Akhtar said: "The fresh notification (to extend the ban) was issued before the expiry of the earlier notification and so it is bad in law." |
Sadique Alam clears UPSC exam three times in a row Posted: 11 May 2010 06:03 AM PDT By TwoCircles.net Staff Reporter, Patna: Sadique Alam belongs to a poor family but he was determined to be an IAS officer. He cleared UPSC exam three times. First time he cracked India's top exam in 2007 in first attempt obtaining 445th rank but he was not satisfied and again sat in 2008 to better his rank. Unfortunately his rank fell down from 445 to 595. This did not deter him from trying in 2009 and finally he got 135th rank this year, thus his dream to be an IAS officer came true. |

The Muslims of the village have collected about Rs 70,000 to help in construction of the lord Shiva temple for Hindus, who are financially not so strong. According to the village Pradhan Haji Rafaqat Ali, who is also advisor of the temple, the construction was initially opposed by some villagers but they soon joined others in supporting the cause. |

Last year, out of 791 selected candidates, 31 were Muslims. Hence, from around 4% in 2009 the Muslims' selection in the Civil Services Examination, popularly known as IAS exams, has come down to around 2.5%.
