SDPI demands probe into safety measures available at Mangalore airport Posted: 23 May 2010 06:37 AM PDT By TCN News Bangalore: The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), while mourning the death of passengers in the crash of Air India Express flight from Dubai at Mangalore, has called upon the Union Government to order thorough investigations into the mishap with emphasis on whether standard safety measures were available at the Bajpe airport. A. Sayeed, SDPI general secretary, in a statement expressed deep shock at the mishap and offered his party's condolences to the bereaved families in this hour of their personal tragedies. |

But what awaited him was death. Siddique was on board the ill-fated Air India Express flight which crashed in Mangalore on Saturday. As many as 160 persons are dead when an Air India Express flight from Dubai with 169 on board crashed and caught fire today as it overshot the newly built runway while landing at the Mangalore airport. |

Plane's black box found, kin bid loved ones adieu Posted: 23 May 2010 05:40 AM PDT By IANS, Mangalore/Mumbai/Kasargod : A day after the air disaster in Mangalore claimed 158 lives, investigators Sunday found the plane's 'black box' to put together the last moments of the ill-fated aircraft while families, a large number of them from Kerala, went through the painful task of identifying their loved ones and cremating or burying them. At least 146 bodies, mostly charred beyond recognition, were identified by the families by Sunday evening, Air India chairman-cum-managing director Arvind Jadhav said in Mangalore. |
With 30 funerals, Kerala in mourning after plane crash Posted: 23 May 2010 02:10 AM PDT By IANS, Kasargod (Kerala) : Sunday morning saw as many as 30 funerals in north Kerala's Kasargod and Kannur disricts. With 66 victims of Saturday's plane crash in Mangalore being Malayalis, Kerala was clearly in mourning. In fact, Pareppu, a small village in Kasargod was witness to seven funerals. As a mark of respect to the many departed, Nileshawaram town that borders Mangalore is observing a shutdown Monday. Of the 66 Malayalis killed in the accident, bodies of 54 have been identified while efforts are on to identify the rest. |

Karnic and Minu Jain, IANS, Mangalore (Karnataka) : At least 158 people were killed when a packed Air India Express flight from Dubai crashed Saturday while landing at Mangalore's "table top" airport, breaking into pieces and falling into a deep gorge in balls of fire. Only eight passengers survived in what is one of India's worst aviation disasters. |
