Mumbai : Eminent lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has claimed that he has received death threats by e-mail and telephone for his views on issues concerning the Muslim community.

"Yes, that is true and I am filing a complaint with the Mumbai police," Akhtar, a recently nominated Rajya Sabha member, told IANS here Saturday afternoon.

Though he declined to elaborate, some television reports claimed that Akhtar has been threatened by unknown persons sympathetic to the Darul-Uloom Deoband, an apex body of the Deobandi sect of the Sunni Muslims.

Eruvadi (TN): Arafat, Shajahan, Umar Farooque, Abu Backer, Iqra, Hajee, Deen, Madina, and many more like these. Are they titles of Islamic books or any rendition of Islamic scholars? They are incredible names of streets of a Panchayat town where prominent Hindus too live in.

New Delhi : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Saturday condemned "the illegal detention and arrest" of Maulana Noor-ul-Huda, a respected cleric from Deoband who was deplaned from an Emirates flight "on the basis of a trivial complaint".

The party demanded that "the case against Noor-ul-Huda must be withdrawn forthwith" and "he be fully compensated for the losses he suffered as a result of wrongful detainment".

Mangalore: The Popular Front of India (PFI) district committee organised a protest rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner's Office here on Friday demanding ban on Sri Ram Sene and arrest of its leader Pramod Mutalik.

Addressing the gathering, PFI State Committee Member Abdul Razak Kemral said that the real face of Pramod Mutalik has been uncovered through the sting operations of visual media. The episode has brought to light the fact that such organisations pose threat to the security and harmony of the nation, he added.

Gandhinagar : Tanvir Jafri, the son of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri who was killed by rioting mobs during the 2002 Gujarat communal riots, Friday lodged a complaint against Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia for "threatening" his mother Zakia Jafri and the rights activist Teesta Setalvad.
