Youth's drowning triggers protests in Kashmir Posted: 13 Apr 2010 08:57 AM PDT By IANS, Srinagar: Tension gripped north Kashmir's Sopore town Tuesday after a youth drowned in the Jhelum river. Zubair Ahmad, 17, drowned after he along with four other youths jumped into the Jhelum in the tense Sopore town Tuesday evening. Local residents alleged that he was being chased by the security forces before he jumped into the river. After his body was fished out from the river hundreds of locals carrying the body shouted slogans against the security forces. They blamed the forces for chasing the youth who allegedly panicked and jumped into the river. |
4,000 Kashmir employees call off strike Posted: 13 Apr 2010 07:33 AM PDT By IANS, Jammu: Bringing some relief to the state machinery, a section of the Jammu and Kashmir government employees Tuesday called off their strike on an assurance by the state government that their demands would be met in three months. Secretariat Employees Union president Nazir Ahmad Tuesday evening said that 4,000 employees of the secretariat have called off their strike with immediate effect. |
