Is Tamil Nadu going to shut door on minority languages?

Chennai: This is the fear that intellectuals of minority languages in the predominant Tamil speaking state have today, thanks to the M Karunanidhi government's Samacheer Kalvi (Equitable System of Education) policy that will be in force from the academic year 2010-2011. It is certain that due to the policy, based on two-language system (Tamil and English), the state will not allow, after 2015, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada in public examinations.

Asma Saleem wins Sahitya Akademi's award-2009

Sahitya Akademi, India's national academy of letters, every year selects translators of India's 24 languages for the award. The award carries 50 thousand cash amount along and commendable certificate.

Exemplary punishment to Sikhs killers: SDPI asks Pakistan

New Delhi: The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI) today demanded Pakistan government to rise to the occasion and give severest exemplary punishment to the people responsible for the killing of two Sikhs in the North-West Frontier Province several days ago.

Two Sikhs were reported to be brutally killed by Pakistani Taliban on the failure of their family to pay the ransom money.

"The brutal killings like these can never be justified by anyone, whatsoever logic one may put forward," said the statement released by SDPI.

Lucknow: Thousands of Shia muslims took out the traditional 'chup tazia' procession in old parts of Lucknow on Tuesday. The procession originated at 5 am from Imambara Nazim saheb and culminated at Roza-e-Kazmain at around 8 am as per the prescribed schedule. The procession is the sevent permitted procession as per the tripartite agreement between shia-sunni and district administration sealed in 1999.

PDP hits out at Abdullah government for infant's killing

Jammu : Faced with criticism for patronising stone-pelters, Jammu and Kashmir's main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Tuesday walked out of the state assembly demanding action against those responsible for the killing of an 11-day-old infant.

PDP legislators alleged that the government was not serious about tracing the killers of the baby, Irfan.

The baby was killed in his mother's lap in Kashmir's Baramullah town Monday when stone-pelters targeted the vehicle in which the family was travelling.

New Delhi: Urdu Editors in Delhi are unanimous that the biggest issue confronting Muslim community in India is their educational and economic backwardness. The role of Urdu Media in resolution of these issues is crucial. However, they admit they are not playing the role the way it should be. They are not presenting the issues of the community before the government perfectly. For lack of investigative journalism in Urdu Media, they blame lack of fund as well as lack of skilled manpower.

Jeddah: Indian Consul General Sayeed Ahmed Baba inaugurated the Healthy Life Happy Life football tournament, which is part of the ongoing health awareness campaign, run by India Fraternity Forum Jeddah. Ten teams representing different states of the country will be vying for the supremacy in the six-week-long tournament held in three grounds, Kaki, Madaen Fahd and the one near Bader Bakery. Final matches will be played on 19th March.
