No end in sight for commission enquiring 2007 Mecca Masjid police firing

Hydrabad: Friday May 18th, 2007 just before the Juma prayers a blast rocked the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad. Nine people died as a result of the bombing but subsequent police firing on agitated Muslims took the lives of five more. Police have reported to have fired as many as 90 rounds on the crowd that was already in shock over the bombing.

Ulema Council to hold rally in Lucknow

Lucknow : Members of the Ulema Council (a body of Muslim clerics) will hold a rally here Feb 20 to protest alleged harassment of the minority community by the police on the pretext of tackling terror.

Ulema Council, which has been demanding a CBI and a judicial enquiry into the Batla House shootout in New Delhi, will converge here at the mini-stadium in Vikas Nagar locality, where the rally would take place.

Gadkari to open Maulana Azad seminar

Nagpur : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari will open a two-day seminar here Feb 21 to mark Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's 52nd death anniversary, the organisers said Wednesday.

The seminar has been organised by the New Delhi-based Friends for Education and the United Students Association of Nagpur.

Scholars from all over India will converge here to present papers on Maulana Azad, a freedom fighter who was also a scholar, statesman as well as eminent educationist.

Three nabbed for killing 26/11 lawyer Azmi

Mumbai: Three people were arrested here Tuesday for the killing of lawyer Shahid Azmi, who was defending Faheem Ansari, one of the accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks trial, officials said.

The crime branch of the Mumbai Police arrested three people - Devendra Baburao Jagtap (28), Pintu Deendra Dhagle (25) and Vinod Yeshwant Vidhate (32) - in connection with what was the contract killing, Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria said here.

The three men had taken a contract of Rs.100,000 to kill Azmi and Jagtap was the main executor of the plan, he said.

Sibal, Khurshid pat Jamia students for spirit of peace

New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS) Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal and Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid Tuesday congratulated students from the Jamia Millia Islamia university, who returned after travelling over 440 km on cycle and spreading the message of "peace and pluralism".

With the vision of "Dilon Ko Jodo" (join hearts), the rally started from Lord Brahma's temple in Pushkar Feb 6, paying homage at the tombs of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti at Ajmer, via Jaipur, to finally reach Jamia Millia Islamia.

Batla House: Court questions delay in appeal

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Tuesday asked petitioner advocate Prashant Bhushan why had he delayed filing an appeal for the copy of the post-mortem examination report of the three people killed in the Batla House shootout in September 2008.

A division bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Veena Birbal asked Bhushan to explain the delay of several months in filing the appeal and why did he not approach the court earlier.

The court asked the petitioner to file his reply by April 28.

AMU Malappuram campus: Land to be registered this week

Malappuram: After a long bureaucratic tangle and shifts of the campus location, the first plot of land – about 123 acres – for the upcoming off-campus centre of Aligarh Muslim University will be registered this week in Malappuram.

Initially land for the campus was selected in Malappuram. But the ruling party in the state found some problems in it and the project was shifted to Perinthalmanna. Later, problems arose here also and again the project was shifted to Malappuram.

Jamia students win Asia round of World Photography Award

New Delhi: Two students of AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Zubair Ahmed and Akshat Jain have won the Asia round of the prestigious World Photography Award by defeating nine countries. They will now try for the world title by taking part in the competition to be held in Cannes, France.
