Union Budget Disappointing: SDPI

Bhopal: The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), has demanded that the UPA Government should have a re-look at hiking of fuel prices, following the presentation of Union Budget, to save "Aam Aadmi" (common man) from further blues of shooting prices of essential goods.

A. Sayeed, General Secretary SDPI, in a Press release said that SDPI is totally disappointed with the Union Budget presented by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Parliament as increase in fuel prices will further fuel upward the prices of essential commodities.

New Delhi: First time in my 32-years-old life, I walked 5 kms in pursuit of an Eid Miladu-un-Nabi procession. This was the longest procession taken out every year in Delhi to celebrate the Birthday (12th Rabi ul Awwal) of the last Prophet of Allah Hazrat Muhammad. First 2 kms to catch the procession as it had left behind a heavy traffic jam leaving no option but walk, and then next 3 kms covering it till Shahi Jama Masjid.

Went to Kabul to earn for daughter's marriage, his body arrived instead

New Delhi: He went to Kabul to perform and earn some good money for his eldest daughter's marriage, but little did Delhi-based tabla player Nawab Khan know that it would be his last journey. Khan is one of the Indians who died in the Kabul terror attack Friday.

"This was his first visit to Afghanistan. He went there to earn more and planned to use the money for the marriage of his eldest daughter. We are shocked," said O.P. Shukla, Khan's close friend, his voice choked with grief.

Mufti upset Kashmir not discussed with Pakistan

Jammu: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed says he is "disappointed" that India and Pakistan did not discuss the Kashmir issue at the foreign secretary-level talks in New Delhi Thursday.

In a statement here Saturday, Sayeed said: "If we talk, we have to do it with clear objectives, a sense of purpose, political will and an open mind."

Sectarian clash in Lucknow on Prophet's birthday

Lucknow: Sectarian violence erupted between Shia and Sunni sects of muslims during Madhe Sahaba (praising the companions of the Prophet) procession in old city of Lucknow on Saturday. Heavy police force was rushed to the situation which saved the things from getting worse. Flag march was conducted in the affected areas of Nakhas, Pata Nala and Bajaja while administration stated that a case will be registered against unidentified youths.

Doctorate from Sanskrit university big honour: Pookutty

Mumbai: Oscar winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty is elated that he will soon be awarded an honorary doctorate and says that it is extra special because it comes from a Sanskrit university in Kerala.

"It's a big honour that Sankaracharya Sanskrit University is offering me a doctorate. By winning the Oscar last year, everyone felt that there was a lot of Indian-ness in the Oscar; there were lots of togetherness in the Oscar, lot of brotherhood... maybe it is in recognition of all that the university has decided to give me the doctorate," Pookutty told IANS.

M.F. Husain to accept Qatar citizenship, says son

Mumbai: India's most celebrated artist Maqbool Fida Husain, who has been under attack from sections of the Hindu right, has accepted Qatar's offer of an honorary citizenship as having a "sense of belonging" was important at this stage of his life, said his son Owais Husain, who added that his father "missed home in India terribly".

M.F. Husain, 95, has dozens of lawsuits against him across the country for his paintings of goddesses that some Hindus find sacrilegious. The artist has been living abroad as a fugitive since 2006.

South Asian Council for Minorities condemns killing of Indians in Kabul

New Delhi: The South Asian Council For Minorities (SACM) has condemned barbaric suicide attack on the residential facilities of the Indian Medical Staff and other civilians in Kabul and termed it as brutal and totally unjustified. Nine Indians were among those killed in the suicide attack yesterday in the capital city of Afghanistan.

Gafoor to head Maharashtra's anti-corruption bureau

Mumbai : Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Hasan Gafoor, who served as city police chief during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, was Friday appointed director general of the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).

Gafoor is at present the managing director of the Maharashtra State Housing & Welfare Corporation. He will be succeeded in that post by P.P. Shrivastava, who has been promoted to the rank of DGP.

The post of ACB chief was laying vacant after A.N. Roy was appointed the state police chief.
