Apex court moved to end Husain's self-exile

New Delhi : Jammu and Kashmir Panthers' Party chief Bhim Singh has moved the Supreme Court seeking direction to the central government to dismiss various criminal cases filed against noted painter M.F. Husain for allegedly making obscene paintings of Hindu gods and goddesses.

In his lawsuit filed in the apex court, Bhim Singh has also sought direction to the government to bring back Husain to the country from Doha, Qatar, where he is living in self-exile since 2006.

Author, two others held for hurting Muslim sentiments

Hyderabad : Two men N. Innaiah and Subba Rao were Friday arrested in Andhra Pradesh's Khammam town for helping an author in writing a book that reportedly hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims, police said.

Police Thursday arrested Macha Laxmaiah alias Krantikar, author of "Crescent over the world - is a boon or the silent Holocaust" containing blasphemous comments about Islam, the Prophet and the Quran.

A case was booked against him for hurting the religious sentiments of the community.

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday greeted the nation on the auspicious occasion of Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed.

"The universal teachings of love and compassion of Hazrat Mohammad inspire us to work for universal peace and brotherhood," the prime minister said in his message.

Gujarat riot anniv: Aligarh intellectuals seek PM’s intervention for justice

Aligarh: On the eve of 8th anniversary of Gujarat riots, a group of intellectuals in Aligarh today sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention for deliverance of justice to the victims. They demanded that "Gujarat Genocide-2002 should be treated at par with Anti-Sikh Riots-1984 and compensation should be provided to victims on the same scale."

The Millat Bedari Muhim Committee, Aligarh, sent the memorandum through the district magistrate.

Riyadh (Saudi Arabia): The Riyadh chapter of Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni Association last week celebrated their alma mater's 89th Foundation Day. Jamia Millia Islamia was established in Aligarh in 1920. Later in 1988 a special Act was passed in the Indian Parliament, making Jamia a Central University.

Minority Affairs Ministry gets Rs 2600 crore in Union Budget 2010

New Delhi: For a big push for some of its popular schemes, the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs will get Rs 2600 crore for the year 2010-2011. The Central Government, in the National Budget presented today in Lok Sabha, increased about Rs 850 crore for the ministry which was allotted Rs 1755 crore in the 2009-2010 budget. More than 90% of the increased amount will go to three mega scholarship schemes and Multi-Sectoral Development Programme.

2,000 Kashmiri youth to join paramilitary forces

50 percent increase in funding for minority welfare

New Delhi : The government Thursday proposed a hike of 50 percent in plan allocation for the next fiscal for the welfare of minority communities in India.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in his budget speech said: "I also propose to raise the plan allocation for the ministry of minority affairs from Rs.1,740 crore to Rs.2,600 crore for the year 2010-11."

"I am happy to inform the honourable members that we are close to achieving the target of 15 percent priority sector lending to minorities in the current year. This will be maintained for the next three years," he said.

Mostly people think Muslim women are oppressed and forced to wear veil and confined to the four walls of their houses. This is mainly because we read every day in papers that Taliban force women into veil, burn down girls schools and always portray them wrapped completely in black cloth from head to foot. This image of Muslim women was further reinforced by the burqa controversy which erupted in France.
