Court notice to CBI on Amit Shah associate's bail plea

Gandhinagar, Sep 3 (IANS) The Gujarat High Court Friday issued notice to the CBI on the anticipatory bail plea of Yashpal Chudasama, a close aide of former minister Amit Shah, an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh staged shoutout case.

Ajay Patel, another aide of the former minister, has also filed for anticipatory bail but the matter is yet to come up. The notice is returnable Sep 13.

Salauddin Ahmed appointed first Muslim Chief Secretary of Rajasthan

Jaipur: Earlier this week, Rajasthan appointed Salauddin Ahmed to be the new Chief Secretary of the state. Salauddin is 1975-batch IAS officer.

Salauddin Ahmed was born in Lucknow in 1952 and was the Additional Chief Secretary prior to his promotion.

Ahmed is an MA in modern history. He has also a degree in public management from University of Sussex, UK.


Stop use of arms against stone throwers in Kashmir: Activists

Mumbai : The government should call for an immediate halt to the use of arms by security personnel against stone throwers to end the turmoil in the Kashmir Valley, a group of activists urged at a conference here Friday.

Among other things, the meeting convened by Peace Mumbai, a network of social organisations, called for an immediate withdrawal of security forces from the civilian areas of Jammu and Kashmir where over 60 people have been killed, mostly in firing by security forces, in the last three months of turmoil.

Gandhinagar : The additional sessions judge, Ahmedabad, A.S. Shah Friday issued notices to the Gujarat and Delhi governments following fears of a staged shootout killing voiced by a kin of an Ahmedabad railway station bomb blast accused.

Iliyas Pathan, lawyer of 2007 Ahmedabad railway station bomb blast accused Mohammed Aslam alias Aslam Kashmiri, Friday filed an application expressing fears of an alleged staged shoot-out killing while in transit.

Shah's court appearance deferred due to hospitalisation

Gandhinagar : Gujarat's former minister of state for home Amit Shah, the prime accused in the Sohrabudin Sheikh staged shoot-out case, did not appear before the court Friday through video-conferencing due to his hospitalisation.

The designated Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) judge A.Y. Dave was informed by the jail authorities that since the former minister was in the government civil hospital, he would not be able to present himself before it even through video-conferencing.

High court adjourns hearing in Ishrat Jahan case

Gandhinagar : The Gujarat High Court Friday adjourned the hearing in the Ishrat Jahan staged shoot-out case to Sep 9 with the Supreme Court still considering the matter and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) conveying its inability to probe the case.

A division bench of judges Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari adjourned the hearing after the Supreme Court appointed SIT headed by R.K. Raghavan, a former CBI director, conveying in writing its inability to take up the case.

New Delhi: Describing the situation in Kashmir as "critical and tragic", a delegation from the civil society, which visited the valley recently, Friday called for the immediate withdrawal of the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Social activist Swami Agnivesh, who led the team, told Agence India Press here that the people whom the team met in Kashmir "complained about the total insensitivity of the central government as well as the people and media in India to the tragic happenings in Kashmir".

Commission probing civilian deaths in Kashmir starts inquiry

Srinagar: A judicial commission appointed by the state government in July to probe 17 civilian deaths in the Kashmir Valley between June 11 to July 19 this year on Thursday started its process of inquiry.

Secretary to the commission of inquiry Tariq Ahmad Banday issued a public notice, seeking information from persons, groups or organisations having any knowledge about incidents which led to the killing of 17 civilians, beginning with the death of 17-year-old Tufail Ahmad Mattoo after he was allegedly hit by a teargas shell at Rajouri Kadal on June 11.

New Jersey temple cancels Rithambara program

New Delhi: Hindu Samaj Mandir, a temple in New Jersey has canceled a program of Sadhvi Rithambara that was scheduled in their facility from Sept 2 to 6.

An advocacy group, Indian Muslim Council-USA (IMC-USA) has welcomed the decision by the temple authorities to not let their facilities be used by Rithambara.

"I am truly heartened to hear the Hindu Samaj Mandir's decision for not allowing Sadhvi Ritambhara to speak at their facility" said Rasheed Ahmed, president of IMC-USA.
