Srinagar: In a significant development, J&K Bank had adopted Seed capital fund scheme of government of Jammu and Kashmir to provide hassle free finance to the unemployed educated youth in the state. In this regard, the bank, in its board meeting held on August 30, 2010 has in principle agreed to act as a partner-financier to this newly formulated scheme launched by the state government under 'Sher-e-Kashmir Employment and Welfare Programme for the youth (SKEWPY)'.

Hundreds of Wakf properties in Delhi illegally encroached by ASI

New Delhi: There are around 158 Wakf properties in Delhi which are under the illegal encroachment of Archeological Survey of India.

Delhi Wakf Board (DWB) has accepted this fact, in reply to an RTI query by Afroz Alam Sahil, an RTI activist. Most of these properties are worth millions of rupees as they are located in the prime locations of the capital city, Connaught Place for instance.

Amit Shah challenges apex court's handing over of Sohrabbudin case to CBI

New Delhi : Gujarat's former minister of state for home Amit Shah has moved the Supreme Court questioning its Jan 12, 2010, judgment handing over the investigations into the Sohrabuddin Sheikh-Kausar Bi abduction and killing case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Shah, now in judicial custody, has questioned the propriety of the apex court bench of Justice Tarun Chatterjee and Justice Aftab Alam hearing the matter and handing over the investigation to CBI when Justice Chatterjee himself was under the CBI scanner.

Police oppose bail to Maudany, final hearing on Sep 6

Bangalore : Karnataka police Thursday opposed granting bail to People's Democratic Party chief Abdul Nasir Maudany, now in jail here for alleged involvement in the 2008 serial explosions in Bangalore.

Maudany, arrested by the state police from his camp in Kerala Aug 17, has sought bail claiming he has been falsely implicated in the blasts that killed a woman and injured 15 others July 25, 2008.

Mumbai : Senior jurist and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ram Jethmalani Thursday demanded the immediate arrest of Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, who he alleged is on Pakistan's payroll and responsible for the current unrest in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing mediapersons, Jethmalani said the young people indulging in violence against the police in the state are instigated by persons "in the pay of Pakistan, of whom Geelani is the leader".

Srinagar: Srinagar: Life was again crippled in the Kashmir valley due to general strike, called by breakaway Hurriyat Conference (G), and curfew restrictions in some parts.

Shops and business establishments remained closed today, after doing brisk business yesterday, in the Srinagar and its adjoining areas.

Curfew and restrictions re-imposed in Srinagar, Sopore and Anantnag towns in view of protest marches and shutdown called by the separatists across the Kashmir Valley.

Ranchi clash: City tense but no untoward incident

Ranchi: The Jharkhand capital is tense but peaceful as no untoward incident has occurred since last night when members of two communities clashed over use of loudspeaker at a function for Janamashthami near a mosque, leaving at least six people injured.

The Hindpidhi area where the incident took place last night wore about deserted look this noon with few shops open in this market place while jawans of Jharkhand police and Rapid Action Force patrolling the streets. No untoward incident, however, has been reported since last night.

Srinagar : Uneasy quiet prevailed in the Kashmir Valley Thursday with few restrictions but a shutdown called by separatists ensuring that shops, educational institutions and businesses were shut again after the brief hours of normalcy the day before.

The bustle had returned Wednesday as authorities lifted curfew and separatists called off protests and shutdowns. Businesses resumed work and shoppers thronged markets to buy essential goods.

Prez assents to Personal Laws (Amendment) Act 2010

New Delhi: The President of India on 31st August assented to the Personal Laws (Amendment) Act, 2010. The Act, published yesterday in the Gazette of India as Act 30 of 2010, has amended the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890 and the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956.

The Act is aimed at bringing gender equality in the matter of guardianship under the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890 and in the matter of giving in or taking in adoption a son or a daughter by father or mother under the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956.

Communal clash during Janmashtami function, eight injured

Ranchi : Eight people, including two policemen, were injured in a communal clash at a function organised for Janmashtami here, police said Thursday.

The clash took place at Hindpiri colony late Wednesday over loudspeakers being used on the occasion of Janmashtami - the birth of the Hindu god Krishna. Some Muslims opposed the loudspeaker being used at Tarabi, the prayer offered during Ramadan in the evening.

Members of both the communities accused each other of creating trouble in the area and pelted stones on each other and fired gunshots.

Rubabuddin charges Modi with contempt of apex court

Gandhinagar : Rubabuddin Sheikh, the brother of staged-shootout victim Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Wednesday served a legal notice on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi charging him with contempt of the Supreme Court with his derogatory remarks against the CBI that is probing the case.

The notice dated Aug 28 sought a response within a week whereafter he would take "appropriate action" in the matter.
