Kashmiris condole death of India's envoy to Italy

Srinagar: India's ambassador to Italy Arif S. Khan, who passed away in Rome Wednesday, had a strong Kashmir connection.

Khan, 58, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 1975 batch, was married to a Kashmiri woman, Farida.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

A union secretary level officer, Khan also served as the spokesperson of the external affairs ministry.

Later, he held other senior positions like India's envoy in New York, Syria and Paris.

Media Scholarship for Muslim students at IMII

New Delhi: Here is good news for the students belonging to Muslim and other backward communities and who aspire to become journalist. The International Media Institute of India (IMII), in its noble initiative to support the interests of these groups, is offering full scholarship assistance for limited number of students. IMII, located in Noida near Delhi, offers an 11-month post-graduate diploma in multimedia journalism. The classes will start on 5th July 2010.

The amount of scholarship is up to Rs 50,000.

Ahmedabad railway station blast accused chargesheeted

Gandhinagar: Mohammed Aslam Latif, an accused in the bomb blast at the Ahmedabad railway station in 2006 that left 10 people injured, was charge-sheeted Thursday by the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Gujarat police with providing assistance for the blasts.

In the charge-sheet filed in the court of Ahmedabad Metropolitan Magistrate G.S. Gamit, Latif alias Imran Mohammed Latif, has been charged with providing logistics support, mobile phones, CDs of the 2002 communal riots and providing assistance for the blasts.

New Delhi: The post-mortem reports of Atif Ameen and Mohd Sajid, the Azamgarh youths killed in the September 2008 Batla House encounter, has exposed the impartiality of the National Human Rights Commission and the Delhi Police, said Jamia Teachers' Solidarity Association in a thorough analysis of the post-mortem reports and demanded immediate institution of judicial probe into the encounter.

Post-mortem impact: AISA demands judicial probe of Batla encounter

New Delhi: As the post-mortem reports of Atif Ameen and Mohd Sajid who were killed in the Batla House encounter in September 2008 have established that they were hit by blunt objects, the All India Students Association has questioned the genuineness of the shootout and demanded judicial probe. AISA also condemned the Congress for not agreeing to judicial probe into the encounter. A fact-finding team of AISA recently visited Azamgarh.

Omar says extend LoC Trade to 4 days per week

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government is seeking permission for extending the trans-LoC trade between India and Pakistan from two to four days a week, besides increasing the number of items enlisted for trade.

Given the massive increase in the volume of barter, the government has already submitted detailed projects worth Rs 75 crore for infrastructure up gradation at the twin border windows; the state legislature was informed on Wednesday.

Srinagar: Kin and neighbours of Bashir Ahmad Baba alias "Pepsi Bomber", a suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militant arrested by Gujarat police, on Thursday staged a peaceful demonstration and sought intervention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his release.

"We request Omar Abdullah to intervene as Bashir is innocent and was implicated by Gujarat police in a fake case," Nazir Ahmad, brother of Bashir, said.

He termed as baseless and unfounded Gujarat police allegations that Bashir was recruiting youth for training in Pakistan.

New Delhi : The government will go ahead with the women's reservation bill with no plans to dilute any of its clauses even though it is open to discussions with any political party, said Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.

"The cabinet has taken a well-informed decision. If we did not believe in the decision we have taken then why would we have taken such a step in the first place?" Khurshid queried, speaking to reporters on the margins of a microfinance conference here.

Curfew relaxed for 14 hours in Bareilly

Bareilly : Curfew clamped here after communal violence was relaxed for 14 hours Thursday but authorities permitted only cycles, autos and rickshaws on the roads.

With no further violence reported, the curfew was lifted from 5 in the morning to 7 p.m., Superintendent of Police Rakesh Jolly told IANS.

The curfew was relaxed for 11 hours Wednesday. The district administration has decided to reopen all educational institutions March 22.

Batla House encounter victims Atif Ameen and Mohd Sajid were hit by 'blunt force impact by object or surface', besides multiple gunshot wounds. The post-mortem report, a copy of which is with TwoCircles.net, has confirmed this. The family members and relatives of the two terror suspects of Azamgarh, who gave them last bath, had claimed the bodies had multiple injuries of brutal beating. The million dollar question: why the police had to resort to beating of the suspects during a 'genuine' encounter.
