Islamic clerics oppose women's reservation

Lucknow :Not only certain political parties, but even some influential Islamic scholars and clerics are strongly opposed to the women's reservation bill.

Their opposition seems to stem from the fact that such a provision will not only entitle but also encourage more and more Muslim women to take a plunge into politics, where it would not be possible for them to strictly adhere to the tenets of the Shariat.

Gandhinagar : Zakia Jaffri in her petition has levelled serious charges against Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 riots, and has made out a case of conspiracy and abetment to commit multiple offences of murder.

The charges of conspiracy and abetment to commit multiple offences relate to sections (120 B, 114 r/w 302) of the Indian Penal Code, furnishing false information (177 IPC), false statement as evidence (199 IPC), giving false information about offences committed (203 IPC) and injuring and defiling place of worship (295 IPC), among others.

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday decided to hear March 22 an Andhra Pradesh government's lawsuit challenging the state high court's ruling striking down a law reserving four percent of seats for Muslim students in professional colleges.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice B.S. Chauhan gave the date after Attorney General Goolam E. Vahanvati, appearing for the state government, sought an urgent hearing.

Narendra Modi summoned by SIT for questioning on riots

Gandhinagar : The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 2002 Gujarat communal riots has summoned Chief Minister Narendra Modi for questioning on March 21.

According to SIT chief R.K. Raghavan, the move to question Modi follows an order by the Supreme Court on April 27, 2009, on a petition of Zakia Jaffri and advocate-activist Teesta Setalvad pertaining to a wider conspiracy surrounding the 2002 communal riots.

The petition had named Narendra Modi and was referred by the Supreme Court bench to the SIT with directions to look into it.

New Delhi : The women's reservation bill continued to stall parliament for the fourth day Thursday as the government sought to calm the opposition by offering a dialogue to resolve differences on the legislation.

But the government's offer for an all-party meeting had no effect in breaking the deadlock over the bill, which led to adjournments in the Lok Sabha as well as the Rajya Sabha.
