Ansari wins praise for handling Rajya Sabha ruckus

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, a relative newcomer to politics, won praise from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and others for the manner in which he controlled the ruckus in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday over physical eviction of seven suspended opposition members from the house.

"I must compliment the chairman and the deputy chairman for the manner in which they handled the situation," Manmohan Singh said while intervening in the over three-hour debate in the Rajya Sabha Tuesday on the Women's Reservation Bill that the house later passed 186-1.

This month we celebrated the birth day of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is celebrated by Muslims with great devotion and reverence. PM apologises to Ansari

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday apologised to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari for the "disrespect shown to you" by MPs opposed to the women's reservation bill.

"I owe you a profound apology for the disrespect shown to you. These things should never have happened. They have happened, and we have to reflect how to we have to streamline our functioning in future so that these things don't take place," he said in the upper house.

Azamgarh: Rashtriya Ulema Council has strongly condemned the arrest of famous Muslim cleric and president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, Maulana Tauquir Raza Khan by Bareilly police on Monday for his alleged role in the last week's communal violence in the UP district. Cleric arrested for communal clash in Bareilly

Lucknow : Security was Tuesday intensified in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district following the arrest of a leading cleric for his alleged role in last week's communal clash.

Maulana Tauquir Raza Khan, president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, was arrested late Monday from Bareilly, about 250 km from here. It was his "rabble rousing speech" that had led to communal tension in the district last week, officials said.

Suspended MPs squat inside house, Rajya Sabha adjourned again

New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha was adjourned again when the seven MPs who had been suspended earlier Tuesday for unruly behaviour continued to squat on the floor and effusively greeted vice chairman P.J. Kurien when the house reassembled at 2 p.m.

It was the third adjournment for the Rajya Sabha, which has been witnessing repeated disruptions for two consecutive days over differences on the women's reservation bill.

Apparently unrepentant, the seven MPs got up to greet Kurien who adjourned the house till 3 p.m.

New Delhi : Noisy protests against quotas for women in legislative bodies again forced adjournments of the Lok Sabha Tuesday with MPs of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) continuing their protests and slogan shouting.

The Women's Reservation Bill led to three disruptions of the lower house after similar protests forced four adjournments Monday.

When her repeated pleas fell on deaf ears, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the house till 4 p.m. after members reassembled at 2 p.m.

M.F. Husain surrenders Indian passport in Qatar

New Delhi: Iconic artist Maqbool Fida Husain, who has been granted Qatari citizenship, has surrendered his Indian passport to the Indian embassy in Doha, an official said.

The 95-year-old painter met Deepa Wadhwa, India's ambassador to Qatar, Sunday and surrendered his Indian passport, M.R. Qureshi, second secretary at the Indian embassy in Doha, told IANS over the phone.

Indian law prohibits dual citizenship. Once someone accepts citizenship of another country, he has to forego his Indian passport.

New Delhi: Following is the chequered history of the women's reservation bill moved in the Rajya Sabha Monday that seeks to reserve 33 percent seats for women in the country's legislatures:

1996 -- The Deve Gowda government introduces the women's reservation bill as 81st Constitutional Amendment Bill.

1998 -- The bill is re-introduced in the 12th Lok Sabha as the 84th Constitutional Amendment Bill by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government headed Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

1999 -- The NDA government re-introduces the bill in the 13th Lok Sabha.
