The CPI-M termed the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Srinagar earlier this month as "remarkable for the lack of any worthwhile political initiative to tackle the basic problems". |
India increases compensation for Bhopal victims Posted: 24 Jun 2010 08:52 AM PDT By IANS, New Delhi: India Thursday announced a hike in compensation for the Bhopal gas tragedy victims. It also said it is examining ways to extradite then Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson, whom a Bhopal court has declared a proclaimed offender. Announcing the decisions, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said the cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had decided that Rs.10 lakh would be paid to the next of kin of the dead, Rs.500,000 to those suffering permanent disability and Rs.200,000 to those suffering from cancer or renal failure. |
CBI probe sought in Gujarat killing Posted: 24 Jun 2010 07:04 AM PDT By IANS, Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court Thursday admitted a petition seeking transfer of the probe into the alleged staged shooting of Ishrat Jahan to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A division bench of Justice Jayant Patel and Justice Z.K. Saiyed issued notices to the central government, the Gujarat government and the premier investigation agency and fixed the matter for final hearing July 14. |

They are among a group of 15 students selected from across the world to attend the 'International Summer School' organised by the Chair of Islamic Studies at the University of Erfurt Aug 14-29. The two-week workshop will address contemporary debates related to the subject. The summer school has been a successful vehicle for strengthening dialogue on "Islam" and the "West". |
Geelani, Mirwaiz detained in Kashmir Posted: 24 Jun 2010 12:46 AM PDT By IANS, Srinagar: As India and Pakistan opened talks Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani was detained under a tough law and moderate Mirwaiz Umer Farooq was put under house arrest. Geelani was booked under the Public Safety Act for making provocative speeches inciting youths to violence, Srinagar District Magistrate Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo said. "We have booked him under the Public Safety Act. I have signed his detention order," Kakroo said. |

The 4-hour workshop is designed to prepare psychologists, counselors and other certified/licensed mental health practitioners to respond to the emotional and psychological needs of people affected by disasters. |
